In Sumida Ward's Kyojima neighborhood, a noren curtain sways outside Wabisuke, an atmospheric traditional sweet shop renovated from the owner's family home. Stepping inside reveals a calm, unhurried atmosphere, making it an inviting place to step away from the daily rush and linger over tea and traditional sweets.

When perusing the menu, the classic Japanese confections are the natural place to begin. The ohagi—available in sweet red bean paste, sesame, and kinako roasted soybean flour—are modestly sized and pair wonderfully with carefully brewed sencha or matcha. Bowls of colorful anmitsu and cream anmitsu are served alongside seasonal treats like chestnut anmitsu and shaved ice, offering varied sweets throughout the year.

Beyond desserts, the menu includes warm savory dishes such as ozoni soup, isobeyaki grilled mochi, and in winter, oden simmered in clam broth, making it easy to enjoy a light meal before moving on to sweets. The gentle hospitality of the shopkeepers and the presence of the resident cat further contribute to the shop's quiet, idyllic charm.

Wabisuke is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 to 17:00, and payment is cash only. Set aside plenty of time to sit back and savor these thoughtfully crafted sweets and freshly prepared tea.
